Statement from President Joe Biden on Passover

The number of Chabad centers vary per country; the majority are in the United States and Israel. The protest, organized by pro-Palestinian Jewish groups, marked what has been a distinctly different Passover celebration for Jewish people in New York City and beyond, as college campuses and family dinner tables feel the ripple effects of the Israel-Hamas war. “This blatant antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous — and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country,” Biden said in a recent statement. Some in the leadership sought to quash this enthusiasm, but on Sunday, Jan. 31, 1993, the news media were summoned to Chabad headquarters in Brooklyn with the promise that the rebbe would finally reveal himself as the messiah. This belief persisted among some segment of the Chabad community even after Schneerson died in 1994 at the age of 92, leading some to suggest that Chabad was morphing into a community of heretics who held to a doctrine categorically rejected by Jewish law.

Material Culture in the Jewish Home

Under Kehot Publication Society, Chabad's main publishing house, Jewish literature has been translated into 12 different languages. Kehot commonly distributes books written or transcribed from the rebbes of Chabad, prominent chassidim and other authors who have written Jewish materials. A mitzvah tank is a vehicle which is used as a portable "educational and outreach center" and a "mini-synagogue" (or a "minagogue") by Chabad members who are involved in outreach.

History and Philosophy

Following the deaths of the first and third rebbes of Chabad, disputes arose over their succession. Funds for activities of a Chabad center rely entirely on the local community. For the day-to-day operations, local emissaries do all the fundraising by themselves. Chabad's central organization representing the movement at large, Agudas Chasidei Chabad, is headed by Rabbi Abraham Shemtov.

Community

Schneerson was emphatic about the need to encourage and provide strong education for every child, Jew and non-Jew alike. In honor of Schneerson's efforts in education the United States Congress has made Education and Sharing Day on the Rebbe's Hebrew birthday (11 Nissan). Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, had a core of dedicated Hasidim who maintained underground yeshivos and mikvehs, and provided shechitah and ritual circumcision services in the Soviet Union. We raise funds by engaging donors, mega-donors, foundations, federations, governments, and other sources of support on behalf of the entire Chabad on Campus network.

Outreach activities

Over time, the controversy subsided, as the mainstream of the movement moved decidedly away from such talk. Major holidays include the dates of the release of the leaders of the movement, the rebbes of Chabad, from prison, others corresponded to the leaders' birthdays, anniversaries of death, and other life events. We create a sense of community within the network, support the personal lives of Chabad house directors and their families, and provide professional development and resources to establish, maintain, and grow strong campus Chabad Houses. A month into the war in Gaza, the Education Department’s civil rights office sent a letter to schools reminding them that they are legally obligated to prevent discrimination against students, be they Jewish, Israeli, Muslim or Palestinian. Buffalo Jews have a rich history of forming both formal and informal institutions for religious, educational, political and social needs. From synagogues to organizations, and from coordinating agencies to groups and clubs, Jewish Buffalonians have seen a changing range of institutions supported by group endeavors and community philanthropy.

We provide impactful programs, experiences, and resources to help Chabad Houses engage students. Chabad houses are typically run by a rabbi and his wife—often with the assistance of unmarried young men or women affiliated with Chanad, or, in the case of more developed Chabad houses, with the assistance of a second or even third married couple.

One could just as easily say that it is not this informant who is setting up the objects to create boundaries, but the objects themselves that create a boundaried world in which my informant lives. They are filled with ethnic and religious objects--and everyday objects imbued with special meaning. Schneerson spoke endlessly about hastening the arrival of the messiah (moshiach, in Hebrew) through the performance of the commandments.

The first Chabad emissary was dispatched by Yosef Yitzchak to Morocco in 1950, but under his successor Chabad’s outreach network came to span the globe. Schneerson was an early pioneer of outreach to less identified Jews (known as kiruv). In 1978, his birthday — 11 Nissan on the Jewish calendar — was designated by the U.S. Congress as Education Day U.S.A. (now Education & Sharing Day, USA) in recognition of Schneerson’s commitment to education. House Republicans have long accused elite colleges and universities of skewing left and pursuing a “woke” agenda that tramples on parental rights. But the antiwar outbursts on campuses across the country that began shortly after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel — and the rise of antisemitism on college campuses, according to the Anti-Defamation League — are now oft-repeated targets of Republican criticism.

What Gift Do You Give at a Jewish Wedding?

The Chabad House of Buffalo in Getzville is located near the Ellicot Creek footbridge, opposite the Wilkeson and Spaulding dorms at 2450 North Forest. It opened in 1976, and is also a short walk from the suburban Jewish Community Center. During the summer, Chabad House of Buffalo also operates a children’s day camp called Gan Israel Day Camp at the site. The tumult spreading through college campuses is especially tricky for Biden as he works to rebuild the voting coalition from the 2020 presidential race. Many of the students protesting the war in Gaza say they are unhappy with him for not bringing about a cease-fire. As of 2020 there were over 3,500 Chabad centers in 100 countries.[82][83] The Chabad movement's online directory lists around 1,350 Chabad institutions.

Mitzvah tanks have been commonplace on the streets of New York City since 1974.[114] Today, they are used all over the globe in countries where Chabad is active. "When I started college, I had no idea there was a Chabad on campus. When the rabbi reached out to me and made me feel welcome, I knew I had to try. Chabad is a family that brings people close together, not just during the events, but constantly." Basil Rodriguez, 23, argued Wednesday that Johnson and any lawmaker who backed sending aid to Israel is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.

House has visited a college campus amid ongoing protests that have led to tense exchanges between pro-Palestinian and Jewish students. More than 100 people on Columbia’s campus were recently arrested and charged with trespassing, with several students who took part in the protest facing suspension just weeks before year’s end. Shafik called on the New York Police Department, whose officers arrived in riot gear, to arrest protesters just one day after she and other Columbia leaders told Congress she would make changes aimed at ending the harassment of Jewish students. The school also announced it would start a hybrid learning model for the rest of the year. Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the ensuing Israel counteroffensive touched off a wave of antisemitic incidents around the country and turned college campuses into flashpoints of anger.

Over the weekend, 37 liberals voted against sending $14 billion in aid to Israel over concerns that humanitarian aid would not reach Gaza, joining 21 Republicans who did not support the measure over spending concerns. House Republicans have been pummeling the heads of elite university institutions for months, using them as a punching bag to make a broader point about how out-of-touch elite institutions are with normal Americans. Johnson has previously invited Jewish students to meet with him in the Capitol, and he has often allowed them to tell their stories of being under attack at school during news conferences. House Democrats descended Monday onto Columbia’s campus to express outrage over antisemitic harassment of Jewish students on and around campus. They included Jewish Reps. Josh Gottheimer (N.J.), Dan Goldman (N.Y.), Jared Moskowitz (Fla.) and Kathy Manning (N.C.).

In 2018, a spokesperson for Chabad estimated that the movement collectively raises $1-2 billion annually. After Shneur Zalman’s death, leadership passed to his son, Dovber Schneuri, who moved the Chabad seat to the town of Lyubavichi, today located in western Russia not far from the border with Belarus. The movement would be centered there for about a century, until Dovber’s great-great-grandson, Sholom Dovber Schneersohn, the movement’s fifth leader, moved to the port city of Rostov-on-Don in 1915. After his death in 1920, his only son, Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, became the movement’s sixth leader. On the whole, Chabad practices are generally consistent with those of the wider Orthodox world, but the group does have some unique practices.

Rabbi Schneerson was a pioneer in the field of Orthodox Judaism outreach (Kiruv). Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson also initiated a Jewish children's movement, called Tzivos Hashem (lit. "Army [of] God"), for under bar/bat mitzvah-age children, to inspire them to increase in study of Torah and observance of mitzvot. College is an ideal time to grow as a Jew, so check out our vast educational programs, such as jLearn and Sinai Scholars Society. Chabad houses are independently funded by the local community (apart from those in tourist destinations or Asian business hubs).

Unlike other Hasidic groups, Chabad men wear fedoras; other Hasidic groups typically wear some kind of fur-lined hat. Chabad men also have a custom of donning two pairs of tefillin each morning (most Jews who pray with tefillin only wear one), reflecting a divergence of opinion in medieval times about the order of the texts placed inside the wooden tefillin boxes. And Chabad observes a number of unique holidays, generally connected to important dates in the lives of previous movement leaders. Chabad’s influence is largely the product of the efforts of nearly 5,000 Chabad outreach professionals — known as shluchim, or emissaries — that operate some 3,500 Chabad institutions in 100 countries and all 50 U.S. states. Typically, the shluchim are a married couple that live in and operate a “Chabad house,” offering meals, classes, prayer services and (depending on the location) tourist services. A number of groups have split from the Chabad movement, forming their own Hasidic groups, and at times positioning themselves as possible successors of previous Chabad rebbes.

And in the decades after his death, Chabad’s worldwide expansion continued apace. Born in 1902 in what is now Ukraine, Schneerson — universally referred to by his followers simply as “the rebbe” — was recognized as a gifted scholar from a young age. In 1928, he married one of Yosef Yitzchak’s daughters, Chaya Mushka (they were distant cousins), and moved to Germany, where he studied at the University of Berlin. After the rise of the Nazis, Schneerson fled to Paris, where he continued his secular education at the Sorbonne. He arrived in the United States in 1941 and worked for a time as an engineer at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
