My Sister’s House is our women and children’s shelter in Atlanta. This is a long-term care facility for those that choose help. It’s a loving environment that has seen a lot of life change happen and for that, we are so grateful. Atlanta Mission is the city’s largest and longest-running provider of services to homeless men, women and children.

My Sister’s House also provides counselors, referrals to job training programs, and help in finding housing, medical and legal resources. For hurting mothers, My Sister’s House has a fully developed childcare facility staffed with a behavioral specialist and social workers. My Sister’s House is designed to meet a person’s basic needs like food and shelter, but also provide customized care to every woman and child that walks in the door. Atlanta Mission Next Steps is an extension of Atlanta Mission that specializes in workforce development for clients who are ready to take the next step in their journey of ending homelessness. Why the name “My Sister’s House”?
Having poured thousands into an older house with maintenance issues, a single mother aimed her $450,000 budget at something newer and nicer for herself and her teenager. She says you need to learn to accept help and that you don’t have all of the answers if you want to make progress. “Some of my favorite times during Next Steps were each morning during the morning motivations,” she says. “I’m not going to lie—at first, I was like, ‘Oh, this is so redundant. ’ But then, all of the sudden, I’m done with Next Steps and I realize that that was actually kind of fun. Nobody expects to be homeless, but unexpected things happen sometimes.
Services based on availabilityFor men, addiction recovery services happen at The Potter’s House. From our humble beginnings as a small soup kitchen and 20-bed shelter, we’ve grown to operate four facilities serving Metro Atlanta’s large homeless population. It didn’t take long for Ms. Haynes to receive an offer on her house, but that meant she was in a hurry to find a new one. It was already late September 2023, and her closing date for the sale of her home was Nov. 1. With a budget of $450,000 and a Federal Housing Authority loan, she set out to find a house she could live in for a good 20 years or longer. This four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom, 2,445-square-foot house was built in 1991. It sat at the end of a cul-de-sac in a sought-after subdivision called Brookstone, in the small city of Acworth. With its ample backyard, screened back porch and deck, Ms. Haynes could see the potential. There was an eat-in kitchen with a breakfast bar and a family room with a fireplace, but several rooms needed updating.
